FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jacksonville, Fla. – April 23, 2007 – The MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation currently has five girls (Kenia Stokes, #2, 9th grade; Syreeta Smith, #3, 10th grade; Shadarian Davis, #4, 9th grade; Neshele Scott, #5, 9th grade; Cicely Davis, alt, 9th grade) playing on the Lee High School girls tennis team. Each of these young tennis players recently competed in the high school district tennis tournament and was instrumental in helping their team reach a milestone in advancing to the next round. On Monday and Tuesday, April 16-17, the Lee High School girls team ended the team competition in a three way tie with Englewood and Fernandina Beach High Schools. Kenia Stokes, Syreeta Smith and Shadarian Davis all won their district singles titles to contribute to the tie. Then, during a playoff on Wednesday, April 18, Lee’s team was victorious in advancing to the regional finals in a round-robin format to break the 3-way tie. Lee’s luck could not continue however as they lost to Gainesville High School in the Regional Finals on Friday, April 20. “This is a monumental occasion for MWKF,” said Terri Florio, executive director of MWKF. “As on organization, we offer free tennis lessons to the students actively involved in our after-school program. Although the lessons are a part of what we offer, we focus on academic success and life goals but we are truly proud to say that these student-athletes began their tennis as a part of our program.” |
