Governor Bush Award Points Of Light Award To MaliVai Washington

Jacksonville – Governor Jeb Bush announced earlier this week that MaliVai Washington will be recognized as one of this year’s Points of Light Award recipients.  The award will be presented to Mr. Washington by Congressman Anders Crenshaw during a press conference that will be held Monday, February 27, at the Emmett Reed Community Center. The community center is the current home of the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation’s flagship, after-school program, Tennis and Tutoring (TnT). The press conference is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

During Black History Month, the February Points of Light Awards recognizes outstanding African Americans dedicated to community service in Florida.  The 2006 Black History Month theme is "Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Future."

“It is truly an honor to be considered for and receive an award like this one,” said MWKF Founder and President MaliVai Washington. “It's even more exciting to receive recognition for doing something you really love to do. We look forward to continuing our commitment to our community.”

The MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation (MWKF) was established by ’96 Wimbledon finalist MaliVai Washington to introduce tennis as a tool to develop positive life skills and encourage academic achievement in youth who otherwise might not be exposed to the sport. MWKF runs a comprehensive five-day-a-week after-school program in Durkeeville and has introduced tennis into the lives of more than 14,000 local children.

The Governor’s Points of Light Award, sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, recognizes a Florida resident or organization that demonstrates exemplary service to the community.  Award recipients are announced weekly.  A panel of judges composed of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor.  Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program.  For more information, or to nominate, go to www.VolunteerFloridaFoundation.org.
