Communities In Schools of Jacksonville and the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation celebrate the newest Take Stock In Children Scholars.

Jacksonville Fla. – January 20, 2006 – Communities In Schools of Jacksonville is partnering with the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation to provide scholarships to students being mentored by the Foundation. College scholarships will be awarded through the Take Stock In Children program of Communities In Schools.

The new Take Stock In Children Scholars have shown great dedication to their education and are all maintaining good grades, which helped to make them eligible for the scholarship. All scholarships target low-income families. Students must maintain good grades, stay in school, and regularly meet with their mentor. Once the students graduate from high school, the scholarship will become available for use as the scholarship recipients look to attend any community college, state college, or vocational school in Florida.

MaliVai Washington, founder and president of the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation, says, “This partnership with Communities In Schools and Take Stock In Children provides three great tools to ensure a student's success – mentors, scholarships, and hope.”

The MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation has been providing quality after school youth development programs in Jacksonville for 10 years.  Their mission is to utilize tennis to increase academic performance, self-esteem and positive behavior choices.

Communities In Schools hosts the local Take Stock In Children mentoring and scholarship program, which is a state wide initiative. Communities In Schools just celebrated 15 years of operating in-school educational and positive youth development programs that also include the Team Up after-school program and AmeriCorps literacy program.

A “contract signing” ceremony will be held for the new Take Stock In Children Scholars with the students, parents and mentors on January 26 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at FCCJ's Advanced Technology Building.

MWKF scholars who will sign contracts are:  Marc Atkinson (junior, Lee High School), Barresha Bell (7th grade, Kirby Smith Middle School), Markevius Collier (junior, Wolfson High School), Syreeta Smith (freshman, Lee High School) and Jazzauria Williams (6th grade, John E. Ford K-8 School)
